TAYLOR’S FATHER REPLACED her mother sitting on the bed. Taylor tried not to cry, but she hurt all over, and her daddy was holding her. If a girl couldn’t be allowed to fall apart in her dad’s arms at a time like this, when could she?

“Baby, I’m so sorry. We’re going to find out what’s going on and put a stop to it,” Roark promised her. “How bad is it?”

“I feel as if I got run over by a truck instead of struck by one. Everything hurts. Even my teeth. Even my hair. How is that even possible?” Taylor felt so badly that she didn’t care that she whined the last couple of sentences.

“Iain’s cousins are hunting the remaining Sword Maidens,” Jenny spoke up.

“So he told me. He also told me he believes there are two groups after Taylor,” her father stated.

“I only wanted to be popular in high school. I’m okay being unpopular now,” Taylor mumbled against her dad’s shoulder.

“Roark, if Iain’s correct, it’s probably someone who has found out about the other,” Jenny said.

“That’s what I thought when the brollochan showed up. I contacted Simon to warn him, just in case,” Taylor murmured.

“Well, hell.”

“How would anyone have found out?” Jenny asked. It amazed Taylor to hear a tremor in her mother’s voice that she’d never heard before.

“I have no idea.” Roark frowned. “I’m starting to believe the robbery was a cover. Iain believes his cousins were behind it. That they were trying to kidnap her. That makes sense except for the stabbing part.” He looked at his wife. “I want to believe he’s right, but what if it was to get a sample of her blood for verification? Then there’s the brollochan. I have no idea what to make of that.”

It surprised Taylor to see her mother turn pale. “We need help, Roark. That means someone already suspected. They’re ahead of us. I don’t enjoy playing catch-up.”

“I don’t either. I’ll see if I can see Emrys tomorrow,” Roark said.

“If Haldis healed me, why do I hurt so?” Taylor asked as her father eased her back down.

“Even full-blooded Sidhe healers can only do so much, sweetheart,” her mother replied. “They expend a great deal of energy to do what they do. As you do with some of your talents. You were severely injured. I’m glad that Haldis could do as much as she did.”

“Me, too. It wasn’t a criticism,” Taylor said. “I’m incredibly grateful. She saved me weeks—no, months in a cast.”

“Yes, she did,” Roark agreed. “Tomorrow, we’re going to send her an enormous bouquet of flowers as an extra thank you.”

“Roark, speak with Iain about talking with his father. You, Simon, and Taylor are in danger. I want us on the offense, not the defense.”

Gently patting Taylor’s hand, Roark got to his feet. “I’ll speak to him, Jenny. Taylor, try to rest.”

“Mom, can you help me get a shower?” Taylor asked the moment her father was out of the room. She wanted to make sure there was no glass in her hair.
